Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
